I too am a big fan of Lynch. Enjoyed your post. Two nights ago we watched Jane Campion’s film “Sweetie” and I was wondering if you had ever seen it? Very odd and disturbing. She really got to the heart of a family’s mental illness.
I hadn't watched The Straight Story in about 20 years but when I watched it last month what really struck me is that even though it wasn't written by Lynch, it's kind of a pure distillation of the humanist core of pretty much everything else he has made, all the light elements of his work with the darkness stripped away. Kinda gave me an even deeper understanding of his overall body of work, even.
If you think The Straight Story is his worst film, then our tastes are so different that there's no point reading the rest. I find your list as foreign as firmament to fin.

love Sweetie, such a strange one
Omg, The Elephant Man. Agree. Killed me as a young person.
Wild at Heart is my #1. :)
Then Mulholland Drive. Those two are pretty close for me.
Love Blue Velvet, Lost Highway.
The Straight Story is special in its own way although I rarely watch it.
I liked Eraserhead and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.
Wasn't crazy about Dune.
I had a hard time with Inland Empire, it felt like slogging through Moby Dick (sorry, I think that is your favorite Lynch film?).
Love your posts, I always learn from them.
thank you TR <3
By process of elimination—I calculate—mulholland Drive and Inland Empire are in your top three and I think that’s right.
A door that's never closed is a great way to look at Lost Highway.

Thanks Blake! I have a soft spot for Dune and it’s mishandled awkwardness. I wish they’d let him release it as he wanted.
