Since starting this sub with the desire to recreate the energy of my column at Vice, I’ve realized I value freedom and privacy over visibility and flow. I also realized that by leaving it costless and public, I boxed myself into only writing a very specific mode and only when it pressed me to do so.
Starting next week, Dividual is going to add a paid subscription section (suggested at $8/mo, $80/yr), featuring more regular (4x/mo minimum) book reviews and essays, thoughts on reading and writing and publishing and film and performance, as well as archival content (including out of print articles, interviews, and creative work) and opportunities for readers to submit craft/aesthetic questions via mailbag, and eventually access to private workshops and reading groups, etc.
Several subscribers have already pledged paid subs—I’ll be turning that on and opening directly to all with my first post coming in the next few days (an essay on freedom of speech and the value of ‘putrid’ writing that originally appeared as introduction to James Nulick’s Lazy Eyes). Though I will continue to post free articles when the right subjects hit, I’m looking forward to opening the gates a bit behind the paywall and seeing what happens.
I greatly appreciate the support from those who are able.
Thanks for reading.
Made that pledge real fast.
